Small Things Often
Over the years my life philosophy has shifted more and more towards minimalism. There came a point where I realized that the jet setting life I had imagined for myself was not for me, but rather so that other people could look at my life and tell me how great it was.
Sure, living a life like that would be wonderful but when we imagine it we hardly ever think of the tradeoffs required. When we look at Bill Gates we only see where he is now, not the thirty years of very hard work that he put in to get there.
Now if you’re willing to make that tradeoff all the more power to you. But I am not willing to make that exchange as I have other priorities and preferences.
Instead, I have attempted to optimize all of the small things in my life to extract as much pleasure from them as possible. These are things that I can do every day to make each day a pleasurable affair.
For example, my morning cup of coffee is something that I do not compromise on. I even went so far as to roast my own beans when I couldn’t find any I liked. I absolutely love the taste of coffee and it is the vice that I will take with me to my grave. So I invested a modest sum of money in acquiring the tools to do the job right. Now I get to start every morning with a delicious cup of coffee instead of a cup of hot, dark water.
What are the small things you do every day that you could improve? What is something small that you could add to your daily routine to make it more enjoyable?
